BLOOM'S TAXONOMY QUESTIONS FOR HOLES Ch. 6

Purpose: To assess the students understanding of the novel Holes up till the sixth chapter. This is done by asking a series of questions that are based on the theory of Bloom. These questions test the various ways we think. Anticipate approximately 15-25 minutes for the students to answer these six questions.

Knowledge: What are all the nicknames for the boys in group D? What do we know about the origin of these names? (Caveman, he is large; Squid, do not know; X-Ray, claims to have x-ray vision although he wears thick glasses; Magnet, chronic thief; Armpit, because he smells; Zigzag, again unknown; Zero, part of his name and he is kinda slow. Answers mostly found on pages 17-19.)

Comprehension: Thinking back to the beginning of the novel, explain why Stanley is at Camp Green Lake? (Stanley was accused of stealing shoes from an orphanage. Answer found on pages 22-24.)

Application: Stanley's mother said, "not every Stanley Yelnats has been a failure." From what we've learned which Stanleys had been failures and how? (The only Stanley to be successful was the great-grandfather. Answer found on page 9.)

Analysis: At this point in the novel we have learned a bit about Stanley, and a little about his group-mates. In your opinion, who does Stanley have the most in common with? Who might become a good friend to Stanley?

Synthesis: Suppose Stanley choose to go to the jail instead of Camp Green Lake. In what ways might his incarceration be different?

Evaluation: Do you think digging holes will make these "bad boys" become good? In your opinion, what would help Stanley endure this experience while away from his family?

Assessment: Half of these questions have answers that are factual. The second half are personal opinion and should be graded for completeness and thought applied to answer.
