Raygor Readability Instructions
Directions
The Raygor Readability Estimate is a pre-reading activity for the teacher. This is a method of testing a book for determining at which grade level it should be taught. The Raygor is done in four easy steps.
First of all, the teacher should find a novel that will meet the criteria of the state and the unit which is intended to be taught. This means basically finding a text in the appropriate genre.
Next the teacher takes three 100 word passages, from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. With each of the three passages, count how many sentences there are. If you split a sentence at the end, then count the words in the sentence and estimate how many tenths are used.
Next, the teacher will underline all the words with six or more letters. Count how many there are.
Lastly, use the Raygor Readability chart(Reading: Theory, Research and Practice, Twenty-Sixth Yearbook of the National Reading Conference 259-263.) to estimate the reading level of the proposed novel. This strategy is really much easier than it seems.
In all expect to take about thirty minutes to determine the readability level for you novel.
