Department History

Housed in a beautiful building, the BYU English Department today bears little resemblance to the Brigham Young Academy English classes in 1875. The building on University Avenue in Provo offered classes in grammar, spelling, and rhetoric to students ranging in age from 6 to 14. The department history recounts some of the struggles and sorrows, joys and triumphs that led to today’s 1200+ students and roughly 50 world-class teachers and scholars. Read about the faculty, students, and alumni who make up its rich heritage.
