She received her master's degree in education from City University, Bellevue, and her doctorate from Seattle Pacific University. Since coming to Utah, she has volunteered as a teacher at a local high school. Dr. Dean has a number of major publications, including the books Genre Theory: Teaching, Writing, and Being (NCTE, 2008); Bringing Grammar to Life (International Reading Association, 2007); and Strategic Writing: The Writing Process and Beyond in the Secondary English Classroom (NCTE, 2006).
