Mario Materassi of A.I.S.N.A. interviews Rudolfo Anaya while in Florence. Anaya talks about gaining a "nation-wide circuit of readership" and answers questions about both his upbringing and its influence in the novel. Anaya speaks of the "layers" of spirituality present in his childhood through the influence of the Catholic Church and the animism created by the stories of the old people in Las Pasturas. Anaya states, "the idea of the storyteller or the mythmaker became extremely important to me." Further, Anaya comments on the need for the representation of Chicano culture in the United States.
