Semantic Feature Analysis
PURPOSE OF THE STRATEGY
After reading Seedfolks, the Semantic Feature Analysis Chart
helps students see similarities and differences
among the characters that they may not have recognized as they read the novel
by organizing them in a visual chart.
DIRECTIONS:
Step One: Present Class with Chart
Prepare an overhead of the chart if you want to complete the assignment as a
class. You could also provide the students with handouts for individual completion.
Step Two: Complete the Handout
Begin with the character on the first row, Kim, and ask students to respond to
the statements in the columns. Is she an immigrant? Does she care about others?, etc.
Mark the box with a "+" if it applies to Kim and a "-" if it does
not. Mark the box with a "?" if there is not evidence for the statement in the text.
See completed chart. If the class is divided on an answer, use "+/-" in the column. Ask students
to reread the text to verify or support their answers, if possible.
When students begin to understand
the concept, ask them to list more statements with which the class can compare
the characters and fill in the last three columns with the studentsŐ suggestions.
Continue to fill in the chart for each character.
Step Three: Discuss Findings
Ask students to note things they learned about characters. Ask, "Did you realize
so many characters had so much in common?" "What is the most common characteristic?"
"What are some of the major differences?" "Which characters have some things in common
and some things very different?"
ASSESSMENT
Assign students to choose two characters and present their differences and similarities
on one sheet of paper. This assignment can be completed through drawing, collage,
poetry, or in paragraph form. Have students use the characteristics listed on the
chart and also highlight other features of the characters by reviewing the chapter
named for that character.
