BA in English Teaching (74–91 hours*, including licensure hours)

This major is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. In order to graduate with this major, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education licensing requirements. - This is a closed major requiring application to the program. Application forms are available in the Humanities Advisement Center (1175 JFSB) and the English Education Office (4168 JFSB). Students cannot apply until they have completed at least 9 hours of English major core courses.
- Students must complete the GE Foreign Language option* even if the Advanced Mathematics option has already been completed.
- The English Department requires a minimum of 24 hours of English major course work to be taken in residency at BYU for this degree program. These hours may also go toward BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.
- Grades below C- in professional education courses or content courses will not be accepted in the teaching major or teaching minor. Teacher candidates must have a cumulative 2.85 GPA in teaching major and teaching minor courses to qualify for student teaching.
- Engl 195 is recommended.
- Because upper-division English courses require substantial writing, students should complete their Engl 295 before they begin their first upper-division courses, preferably in the second semester of their sophomore year.
- A teaching minor is not required for licensure. However, it is strongly recommended.
- Engl 276R is prerequisite to Engl 329, 377, 378, 379, and 423. All are prerequisite to Engl 476R.
- Complete the following core requirements:
- Because English is a writing-intensive major, students are strongly encouraged to take a first-year freshman college-level writing course regardless of their AP test scores (Wrtg 150 or Phil 150).
- Fundamentals of language and literature: complete the following:
ENGL 251 : Fundamentals of Literary Interpretation and Criticism.
Note: Students must complete Engl 251 before taking any 300-level courses.
- British and American literary history: complete the following:
- Either
ENGL 291 : British Literary History 1.ENGL 292 : British Literary History 2.ENGL 293 : American Literary History.- Or
ENGL 291 : British Literary History 1.ENGL 294 : Transatlantic Literary History.Note: Students must complete the literary history courses in a period before taking any 300-level courses in that period.
- Complete the following:
ENGL 295 : Writing Literary Criticism.
Note: Students must complete Engl 295 before taking most 300- and 400-level courses for teaching majors.
- Complete two courses from the following:
ENGL 360 : American Literature to 1800.ENGL 361 : American Literature 1800 - 1865.ENGL 362 : American Literature 1865 - 1914.ENGL 363 : American Literature 1914 - 1960.ENGL 365 : American Literature 1960 to Present.
- Complete one course from the following:
ENGL 345 : Literature and Film.ENGL 356 : Myth, Legend, and Folktales.
- (356 is recommended)
ENGL 358R : Ethnic, Regional, and Other Literatures in English.ENGL 359 : The Short Story.ENGL 366 : Studies in Poetry. - Complete three elective hours from the following list (Note: TMA 457 is strongly recommended):

Note: FBI fingerprinting and background clearance must be completed before registration for Engl 276R.
