Adjunct Faculty Perks

Return to Handbook Main Page

In addition to A-Lot parking privileges, adjunct faculty get other perks for working at BYU:

  • Discounts at on-campus stores and for on-campus events
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Harold B. Library
  • The New York Times and MLA Handbook
  • Software and Software training
  • Tuition Benefits
  • UTA Transit Pass
  • Staff Gym
  • Retirement Account
  • Adjunct faculty get 10% off at the BYU Store and 15% off at the MOA store. Adjunct faculty also get some discounts for athletic and cultural events.

  • BYU has partnered with Carelon Behavioral Health to create the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which connects BYU employees and their household members with various counseling services. Through the program, part-time employees can have up to six mental health counseling sessions per person in the household per year, one session with legal counsel per year, and one financial consultation per year.

The program can also help refer you to childcare options, legal counsel, financial services, mental health counseling, and marriage and family counseling. All participation in the EAP services is confidential and comes at no cost to you. For more information and to use the service, visit hrs.byu.edu/employee-assistance-program.

  • The Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL) has a lot to offer adjunct faculty—six-month book checkout, access to online scholarly databases (on- and off-campus), and book delivery to your JFSB mailbox (if you’d like the book delivered to your JKB mailbox, just let the department staff know).

  • Thanks to the HBLL, BYU employees and students can access The New York Times and the MLA Handbook Plus (9th ed.) for free!

    How to Access

    The New York Times

    1. Go to the HBLL’s website.
    2. Sign in so the NYT knows you’re a BYU person.
    3. Click on Journals in the left-hand column.
    4. Type New York Times in the search bar on the Journals page.
    5. Click on “Full Text Online: Official Site.”
    6. Sign up for an NYT account using your BYU email address.

You can access the newspaper on your computer or you can download the app and sign in to read it on your phone.

    How to Access

    MLA Handbook Plus

The online version of the MLA Handbook is easy to access: log into the library’s homepage, type MLA Handbook Plus into the search bar, and click the handbook’s link.

  • You and your students can download software, like Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, for free by visiting software.byu.edu. If you need help or have questions, contact the BYU Office of Information Technology (801-422-4000).

You can also up your game in the classroom by learning how to use popular software, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, and DaVinci Resolve, by taking one-hour classes designed for students, faculty, and staff at the HBLL (lib.byu.edu/services/software-training/register)

  • Adjunct faculty are eligible for a personal tuition benefit. (Unlike full-time faculty, our spouses and dependents are not eligible for a tuition benefit.) To qualify for this benefit, you must

    • apply to the university as a student,
    • have taught at least six credit hours per year for two consecutive years before enrolling, and
    • have an active contract for the semester(s) you intend to use the tuition benefit.
    • apply to the BYU as a student by the appropriate admission deadlines

Also, adjunct faculty cannot use the tuition benefit to purse a graduate degree. For more information, visit hrs.byu.edu/tuition-benefit.

  • You can ride UTA buses, TRAX, Front Runner, and the Utah Valley Express (UVX) for free! Just tap your BYU ID card on the buses’ and trains’ card readers when boarding and exiting.

Spouses and dependents can also ride UTA for free with an affiliate BYU ID card. Information on how to apply for an affiliate BYU ID can be found here: idcenter.byu.edu/.

  • You can use the staff gym or pool in the Richards Building for a fee. More information can be found here: studentwellness.byu.edu/facilities.

  • Adjunct faculty can create a TIAA 403b retirement account through BYU. However, unlike full-time employees, there is no university match (hrs.byu.edu/additional-retirement-plans-tiaa).
