LaVerna S. Clark Creative Writing Scholarship

Instructions for Applying to the LaVerna S. Clark Creative Writing Scholarship

The LaVerna S. Clark family has made generous contributions to the BYU English Department to provide scholarships for creative writing students. Seven annual scholarships will be awarded to students who have recently completed English 218: Introduction to Creative Writing.

Deadline

At the end of each fall and winter semester and at the end of summer term, ENGL 218 instructors will nominate one exceptional student writer per section to submit a portfolio of their writing from that class. From these nominations, judges will award three scholarships each fall and winter and one scholarship between spring and summer terms.

Please observe the following portfolio submission deadlines:

  • Fall sections: January 15
  • Winter sections: May 15
  • Spring/Summer sections: September 15
Eligibility

  • Student must have completed ENGL 218.
  • Student must be nominated by their ENGL 218 instructor.
  • Student must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours in the semester the scholarship is awarded.
  • Preference will be given to students with financial need and students in their freshmen/first year.
Portfolio Instructions

Combine into a single document the following:

  1. Three pieces of creative writing drawn from assignments or exercises completed in ENGL 218. The work must be your own original writing, though you are encouraged to work closely with your instructor or other mentors as you revise work for your portfolio. (creative work should not exceed 20 total pages).
  2. An optional statement (300 words max) describing your financial need. Help us understand your specific situation and why this scholarship money will help. In particular, explain any extenuating circumstances related to your financial situation.

Please note:

  • Portfolios may contain fiction, essay, poetry, or any combination of these genres.
Review and Notification

Members of the BYU English Department will review your application carefully and you will be notified by email of the committee’s decision.
