When did you graduate from BYU?

BA English 2018

What is your job/position? And how would you describe what you do in that job/position?

I’m a marketing and education writer for a company. I write everything from emails to website and marketing copy to ads to video scripts to multi-hour educational courses to product presentations—basically anything they need written, I write!

Describe the path that you took from your BYU English degree to your current career, highlighting the important realizations and turning points that paved the path for you.

I began this job in 2018, which is the same year I graduated. So my English degree took me straight from graduation to my current job where I’ve been for almost four years.

What are the specific skills that you cultivated as an English major that you now use in your professional life? And how do you use those skills in ways that set you apart from your colleagues?

Nothing prepares you to write quite like an English degree. My education at BYU also taught me how to take feedback well and implement changes effectively. I learned how to be unattached to my writing and how to change my tone and style to whatever the current task at hand is.

What are some of the surprising ways in which your English degree helped you in your life?

I think my education prepared me most of all for navigating and appreciating so much about life. How to think critically, ask key questions, and write and read in a versatile way. Most of all, though, I think I love how my education has positively affected my gospel study and day-to-day life. I love learning, and I love how my education has continued to feed and enhance my ability to learn.

What do you wish you had known as an English major? Is there any advice you’d like to share with current students?

Enjoy it, and talk to your professors! Go to their office hours! Meet with them, and get their advice and wisdom and guidance!
