2017

What is your job/position? And how would you describe what you do in that job/position?

Narrative Designer: I design and write stories for video games.

Describe the path that you took from your BYU English degree to your current career, highlighting the important realizations and turning points that paved the path for you.

I was a lecturer with the UVU Literature Department after graduating from grad school, did a master’s degree in Game Production at the University of Utah while concurrently working for Warner Brothers in Salt Lake City.

What are the specific skills that you cultivated as an English major that you now use in your professional life? And how do you use those skills in ways that set you apart from your colleagues?

Learning the fundamentals of storytelling, narrative pacing, and dialogue work helped. The vast amount of reading in world and classic literature also helped me draw inspiration and references for my games work as well.

What are some of the surprising ways in which your English degree has helped you in your life?

It helped me transition to a career in tech, which I would have never assumed.

What do you wish you had known as an English major? Is there any advice you'd like to share with current students?

I would advise them to think outside the box about opportunities and do a lot of investigation in career paths outside academia before they commit to something too quickly.
